Stockton on the Forest has a facinating history. It was originally a
clearing in the Forest of Galtres - a forest that Henry VIII had cut
down to use the wood to build a fleet of ships. Today it is a quiet
country village, complete with shops, a pub & a frequent bus service
to York and it makes a perfect base for exploring York & the splendid
surrounding countryside.
York is steeped in history & has a wealth of attractions to visit
- from Viking remains to ghost walks, from the magnificent Minster to
medieval city walls gatehouses.
The contrasting scenery of the Wolds, Dales & Moors ( Heartbeat
country) are all just a short drive away. So too is the Yorkshire coastline
with the resorts of Whitby, Scarborough & Filey. There are racecourses
at Wetherby & York & a golfcourse less than a mile away.
